MOSES MUKUNDI H’24
Digital Health Insurance for Employers in Africa
Moses Mukundi never imagined that a routine work trip to Uganda would become the spark behind a bold new venture. After suffering a severe asthma attack, he required emergency airlifting to Nairobi, an expense his insurer rejected over a minor paperwork issue. Forced to cover the cost himself, Mukundi walked away not just frustrated but determined. “There has to be a better way,” he thought. That moment of crisis planted the seed for Eden Care, the health insure-tech startup he founded in 2022. Eden Care provides fast, simple, digital health insurance to Africa’s underserved employers and employees. Drawing on his background in business and tech, Mukundi is now working to reimagine healthcare access across the continent by merging user-centered design, data science, and operational efficiency.
“We’re creating the kind of health underwriter we want for ourselves.”
Operating at the Intersection of Technology, Data Science, Business Growth Strategy, and Healthcare
THE CHALLENGE: Sub-Saharan Africa spends $10 billion annually on health insurance, yet penetration stands at just 0.2%, 15 times lower than comparable emerging markets. That means over 60% of healthcare spending is out of pocket, pushing an estimated 15 million Africans into poverty every year due to catastrophic health costs. The root cause? Legacy systems with high admin costs, manual claims processing, inefficient fraud control, and a customer experience that is anything but user-friendly. Employers struggle to provide coverage, while most individuals can’t afford it. Mukundi saw the opportunity not just to digitize insurance, but to rebuild it for Africa’s unique needs.

THE PROCESS: Before launching, Mukundi spent six months conducting field research across Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. He met with over 100 HR managers, 80+ healthcare providers, regulators, and the top six hospitals to understand pain points, demand, and licensing frameworks. What emerged was a vision for a digitally native insurer: simple plans, low overhead, and frictionless user experience. Eden Care focuses on employer-provided plans, leveraging companies and associations as aggregators of demand. Members get access to a curated network of 650+ trusted healthcare professionals and wellness experts, along with Eden Care’s “ProActiv” health program, which supports long-term well-being.
THE RESULTS: Eden Care now serves employers and individuals across East Africa with fast, tech-enabled health coverage. The company generates revenue through underwriting profits and investment income from premium floats. As it scales, Mukundi plans to take on more underwriting risk, increasing both margin and impact. The long-term goal? To reach 300 million Africans and reduce the number of people pushed into poverty by medical bills by more than 80%. Mukundi believes that healthier lives lead to greater educational attainment, especially for girls, stronger families, and a more productive African workforce.
For Mukundi, Eden Care is more than a startup. It’s a mission to restore dignity, financial stability, and well-being, one health plan at a time.
